On April 19, 1943, the Main Directorate of Military Counterintelligence "SMERSH" was created under the People´s Commissariat of Defense of the USSR. The structure´s tasks included combating the intelligence and sabotage activities of foreign, primarily Nazi special services.
The operatives of the 4th department of the Main Intelligence Directorate "SMERSH" were engaged in intelligence and counterintelligence work behind the front.
